A MODERN feature of High Street, Honiton, is to disappear.

The railed traffic island outside The Bed Expert is to be removed to make way for three new pedestrian crossings in the vicinity of New Street.

The pavements outside Lloyds TSB and W H Smith are to be widened to shorten the walk across High Street, while a further crossing is to be installed at the junction of High Street with New Street. Traffic lights are to control the flow of traffic at the junction.

Consultants, acting on behalf of Devon County Council, have designed the scheme to allow for more on-street parking spaces and with the town's street market in mind.

Work, likely to be carried out in the next financial year, could take up to eight weeks to complete.
