But memorial plaque to Norman Welsh MBE may be recreated by school art students

The tribute to 'Music Man' Norman Welsh - too fragile to move

HOPES of preserving a unique memorial to Axminster ‘Music Man’ Norman Welsh have ended on a sad note.

The town council had wanted to relocate the colourful tribute, on a gas box at the redundant Philips Centre, before the area was redeveloped

But at their meeting this week members were told the plaque could not be preserved in its present form.

Now the plan is to photograph the original so that it can be reproduced for display at another site some time in the future.

Town Clerk Hilary Kirkcaldie said an approach would be made to the art department at Axe Valley Community College suggesting that this might be a project which pupils there could work on.

Mr Welsh was a familiar figure in and around the town for many years, playing his accordion to collect vast sums for charity, particularly the RNLI.

His amazing fund raising efforts earned him a well-deserved MBE.
