A huge blaze has broken out at a kitchen furniture store on the outskirts of Honiton.

Eight fire crews are currently tackling the fire at Martha Mockford, on Deer Park Road, Buckerell, as they try to prevent it spreading to adjoining buildings.

A spokesman for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue said the blaze is being fought with jets and breathing apparatus and a water carrier is en-route to the scene.

Firefighters from Honiton, Ottery St Mary, Sidmouth, Axminster, Topsham, Cullompton and Middlemoor - along with the incident command unit from Wiveliscombe and a water carrier from Danes Castle - are currently at the scene.

The spokesman added: “This is an agricultural building measuring approximately 30m x 20m and is fully involved in fire.”

A neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous, told the Herald that the building was ‘gutted’ by the blaze.

They added: “The smoke went up probably at 3pm - that’s when we noticed it.

“Police have closed the road [between Buckerell and Weston].

“I think the building is completely gutted.

“There’s a showroom office there [at the site] and a yard with some sort of storage units. I do not think they have been affected.”

The fire service spokesman said two gas cylinders have been removed from the scene by crews as they were ‘venting’ under the heat.

An officer specialising in hazardous materials and environmental protection has also arrived at the scene, along with a fire investigation officer and a command support officer.

Firefighters are investigating two storage cylinders at the site to ensure the blaze has not spread to them.

A man has been treated for smoke inhalation by paramedics.

The call was made to the fire service at 2.30pm today (Tuesday).

Police say the blaze broke out in an ‘empty workshop building’ in Deer Park Farm, which had no people in it at the time.

A spokesman added officers are liaising with the fire service to see if they can offer support or assist with any risks to the public.

Jeanette Bassett, police constable for local policing in rural east Devon, is currently at the scene - and tweeted a photo of the building on fire.

She added: “The road between Weston and Buckerell is closed. Please find an alternate route around.”

According to power company Western Power Distribution, there are currently 13 properties in the area without electricity.
