Once again East Devon District Council has scuttled plans to hold a street market in aid of the Royal British Legion on Bank Holiday Monday. EDDC seems to be determined to put a damper on anything Seaton wants to do.They are quite happy to take our council tax (which is amongst the highest) but seem determined to reduce us to a ghost town (or dormitory town). Stallholders were coming from a11 over the region and many will have a fruitless journey as they cannot be contacted in time. No doubt, they will not bother to come again. (Maybe this is what the EDDC hopes.)I would have thought, whatever petty reason the council has managed to find to say 'No', they could have got around it - at least at this present time when our troops are returning from service in Iraq and many will probably need help from the British Legion, and as much support as we can give. Why is it that Bridport and Honiton can hold markets all along the main streets without any opposition? What a pity we can't move over the border into Dorset where Lyme Regis seems to get plenty of encouragement to flourish. The other week there was a letter in the paper from a lady from Bath, who used to come on holiday to Seaton, and she was bemoaning the closure of the holiday village and asked why Seatonians didn't protest. I would like to inform this lady that we did, with meetings and demonstrations. We even went to the council office at Knowle to a meeting, but were forbidden to speak. Strange sort of democracy!Mrs B DuckhouseHarepath Road Seaton
