Thief fails to halt support for chip shop fund-raising.

A thief has failed to put the brakes on fund-raising efforts for Children’s Hospice South West in Honiton.

Just months after a burglar stole a collecting tin from the counter of Chippy Joe’s, in New Street, the fish and chip shop’s owner, Joe Gamlen, has come up trumps for the charity.

Together with his staff and customers, Mr Gamlen has managed to raise 312.56 for the hospice.

The figure includes donations from a resident and businessman, who were disgusted that a thief chose to target terminally ill children.

John Capon, of Otter Windows, gave Mr Gamlen 100 for the tin and Carol Gilson chipped in 50.

Sarah Richards, of the charity’s local fund-raising group, said: “Children’s Hospice South West would like to thank everyone who has given.”

Following the burglary, Mr Gamlen put a price on the crook’s head. He offered a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the offender.
