KRYSTAL Stone, of The King's School, Ottery St Mary, describes how work experience went at the Midweek Herald...

After just finishing my first set of exams, I took a week out of A-level studies to participate in work experience in the Midweek Herald's newsroom.I spent last week shadowing editor Belinda Bennett, while she undertook various tasks - from reporting in Honiton to editing the paper on deadline. With only a week to complete a whole newspaper, the pressure was on to gather a wide range of stories, type them up, take pictures and finally edit the paper. My first few days with Belinda were spent finishing last week's Herald. Deadline crept up on us. We had to find a place for our stories to go and make sure the pages looked their best.Wednesday and Thursday were spent in Honiton, with Belinda being the busy lady she is. We visited various people around the town, gathering new stories for this issue of the Herald and sifting through replies and comments generated from stories in last week's paper. We also had to update the Midweek's website with stories, pictures and videos, making time even more valuable to us.On Thursday afternoon, we made a video - recording people's thoughts on the weather.Friday was spent back in the Exeter office, typing up stories and designing pages.During the day, I took a good number of calls from readers who responded to an appeal for views on what types of shops people would like to see in the town centre.Clothes shops and even calls for a cinema were high on your agenda.Overall, it was a week well spent. Piecing together a newspaper is a difficult task, but also a very rewarding one.
