Axminster Rotary Club praises three “excellent candidates”

Three Axe Valley Community College students have achieved the Rotary Youth Leadership Award.

The teenagers, described as ‘excellent candidates’, completed the course at the Youth Hostel Association’s Okehampton base.

Certificates to mark the completion of the course were presented to Matt Chenery, 16, from Axminster, Jonny House, 17, of Seaton and Matt Morbey, 18, from Shute.

Rotary Clubs from all over Devon sponsored 35 candidates on the week-long course which was designed “to develop the leadership skills of young people with potential”.

The participants took part in numerous outward bound activities including rock climbing, mountain biking, gorge scrambling, canoeing. It culminated in an abseil off a 100 foot high bridge.

Students took turns in leading teams and were encouraged in their leadership skills. A variety of speakers also addressed delegates on leadership issues.

The Rotary Club of Axminster was congratulated by the organisers on providing three excellent candidates who were “a credit to their college”.

Rotarian John Brennan, the Axminster Rotary organiser and link for the project said: “The Club knows that this course will influence the lives of young people. It is always hard work for the youngsters going but they find it worthwhile and very rewarding.”
