Support group’s fund raising provides a host of healthcare services and equipment for Seaton

Tributes were paid to Seaton Hospital League of Friends’ retiring secretary at the annual meeting.

Robin Barnard, who has stepped down after 22 years in the post, was sincerely thanked for the work he has achieved during his long service.

Dr Joe Pitt and Mr Tony Fidock were re-elected as chairman and treasurer respectively, while existing trustees were re-elected to serve a further term. Mrs Shirley Robinson was elected the new secretary.

Dr Pitt reported that 50,000 was given by the league each year to fund the Home Nursing Service. In addition, the league financed other items for the hospital last year including ensuites and showers (35,165), mattresses and seat cushions (17,188), panels behind beds to protect walls (5,429) portable ECG machine (1,711), telecare equipment for occupational therapy department (860), hydrotherapy pool (4,230), Wii fit (209), megapulse for physiotherapy department (3,630), demonstration dolls for the baby massage group (92) meals for hospiscare patients (1,678), afternoon cakes for patients on the wards (1,636) and a vending machine in the waiting room (1,250).

Following the business part of the meeting, members were interested to hear a report on Seaton Hospital by David Williams, ward manager. An important change has been the appointment of Emma Bagwell as the new matron, responsible for both Seaton and Sidmouth hospitals.

This was followed by a progress report from Helen Wellstead, of the Home Nursing Service, which operates from the hospital. She explained how the service provides support to patients with a life limiting illness who wish to remain at home. It also supports their families. This has become a much valued service by the community. Helen and a colleague also run a bereavement group at the hospital on the last Wednesday of every month from 7.30pm to 9pm. This group is open to anyone who feels they would benefit.

* The league of Friends is always looking for new volunteers to help in the hospital, at their charity shop in Fore Street or at fundraising events. Anyone interested in volunteering or supporting the hospital in other ways, should contact league manager, Lycia Moore, on 01297 20143.
