THE Parliamentary Spokesman for Tiverton and Honiton Liberal Democrats has thanked the thousands of residents who supported him.

Dr Jon Underwood, from Axmouth, said he was 'humbled' by the 18,000 people who voted for him in the general election.

And he apologised for not winning on this occasion. He also praised his political rivals.

He said: "I'd also like to thank the other candidates for a contest which was clean and focused entirely on the issues, and wish Neil Parish the best for the future as our MP. I hope he can secure a better deal for Devon than we have had from previous governments.

"Once again we have had an election in which a large majority of votes nationwide were wasted - they helped elect no-one. I hope that whatever Government is eventually formed will act to prevent this happening again and to reform our political system."

He said he hoped British politicians would then be able to focus on long-term solutions, instead of short term ones to win a few votes in marginal constituencies.
