A lifeboat was launched to 'rescue' three waving boys on board a dinghy off the seafront at Seaton.
But on arrival coastguards learned the boys were not waving for help - but to their friends on shore.
Sidmouth Lifeboat was sent out to search for an inflatable dinghy drifting south from Seaton Beach on Monday, at around 3.30pm.
The lifeboat returned to the station and was ready for service at 4.28pm.
