Police were called by Holyrood Academy and the school used its lockdown procedures as a precaution

A school in Chard went into lockdown this afternoon after concerns were raised about a possible intruder.

Holyrood Academy emailed parents to say that at 12.30pm it had used its lockdown procedures “as a precautionary measure”.

The lockdown was in operation for no more than 15 minutes before lessons resumed.

An Avon and Somerset Police spokesman confirmed that officers attended an incident in the Chardleigh Green area of Chard.

A male teenager was arrested on suspicion of affray.

The police spokesman said the incident was not within the school buildings or grounds.

“We were called to reports of a disturbance in Chard earlier this afternoon, at about 12.30pm,” the spokesman said.

“We have arrested a teenager on suspicion of affray and seized what appears to be a metal bar.”

The school’s message to parents and carers, which one person posted on Facebook, read: “As a precautionary measure Holyrood Academy used its Lock Down procedures at 12.30pm, due to reports of a possible intruder.

“Staff and students all behaved impeccably and the issue has now been resolved.

“Lessons have now continued as normal.”
