Villagers’ dismay but Seaton councillors welcome the decision
THE refusal to introduce a 7.5 tonne weight limit through Axmouth has been greeted with joy and dismay this week.
East Devon’s Highways and Traffic Order Committee rejected the call on Monday, because it said there was no alternative route for heavy lorries.
Villagers – backed by MP Neil Parish – have campaigned to get the HGVs banned because they say they put residents at risk and harm their many ancient buildings.
But Seaton town councillors, at their meeting on Monday, welcomed the decision not to impose lorry limits.
Peter Burrows said it was a good decision – although he was sorry for Axmouth.
John Meakin said: “I am not (sorry), have they ever helped us?”
Mayor Bob Palacio said: “I think they were just gong to dump their problems on us and that was not the way to proceed.”
Alan Davis, vice chairman of Colyton Parish Council, said they supported a relief road as the solution for Axmouth and would back villagers if they wanted to campaign for one.
