First affordable homes in more than a decade have been completed

A development of much-needed low-cost housing has been completed in Seaton - the first in more than a decade.

Westcountry builders Baker Estates has handed over nine affordable homes to LiveWest - formally the Devon and Cornwall Housing Association.

The development, on two sites at Rowan Drive and Barnards Hill, includes social and affordable rental properties as well as shared ownership houses.

The scheme has been championed by Seaton town councillor Marcus Hartnell who has worked closely with the developers.

He said: "In the last ten years no affordable homes have been built in the town, so the nine new ones are very much welcomed."

Baker Estates is planning to provide a further five affordable homes at its Gardiner's Meadow development, in Seaton, which it hopes to complete later this year.

In addition, the company has provided £116,000 towards education infrastructure and support - which has directly contributed to building works at Seaton Primary School and transport for Axe Valley Community College students.

The house builder also paid £39,000 in open space contributions which will be spent off site on improving local play areas.

Cllr Hartnell added: "The additional financial contributions are equally welcome and will further improve our education facilities and open spaces."

Ian Baker, managing director of Baker Estates, which is based in Newton Abbot, said: "It's important for Baker Estates to work closely with the council and in particular Councillor Hartnell who stressed the importance of affordable homes in Seaton. We have built and handed over affordable homes for young people and families to enjoy for years to come.

"In addition, our construction has created inward investment into the town, including employment opportunities for local people.

"Baker Estates has a reputation for stunning, contemporary houses and bungalows in the south west with its development in Seaton being an example of its growing popularity.

* Baker Estates' latest Seaton development at Gardiners Meadow will offer a range of homes with prices starting from £309,000. The hillside site provides views of the sea and estuary and across the Axe Valley. For more information visit:, or call 01626 241404.
