A man has needed surgery for a tear in his groin after police say he was possibly shot by an air weapon in Honiton.

The incident happened on Sunday, August 30, between 3.30am and 4am in Kings Road. The 25-year-old victim was walking down the hill towards the High Street when a vehicle approached him on the opposite side of the road.

The vehicle was travelling uphill away from town - towards Axminster.

Police say the exact circumstances of the assault are unknown, but are continuing to investigate the possibility he was injured by the bb gun pellet. The vehicle involved is described as a dark blue or purple colour with blacked out windows.

It was about the same length as an estate car – but taller – although not as high as a people carrier.

Police are appealing to anyone who saw anything in the Kings Road area during that time.

Anyone who has any knowledge or information about any similar vehicle or the assault is asked to email or call 101, quoting log 697 30/08/15.

Alternatively, call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
