Meeting to discuss and develop Honiton’s future being held this week

A committee meeting to determine how Honiton will continue to evolve in the future is being held for the first time this week.
Members of the town council’s finance committee will sit down this Wednesday (August 22) to discuss what can be done to improve Honiton for its residents - and visitors.
As well as having to vote in a chair and vice-chair, members will discuss developing Honiton’s status as an environmentally forward-thinking town and the creation of a council information point in its town centre.
A report by Mark Tredwin for the former item said: “One idea that has been voiced is that a project centring on the railway station could be considered.
“There is an increasing amount of rubbish accruing alongside the railway lines and the answer to some of this lies with local businesses promoting reusable and recyclable materials.

“Encouragement of this process could be promoted at Honiton railway station.
“It was thought that by contacting other stations along the railway line, starting with Axminster and Cranbrook councils there might be a way to promote this aim.

“This would extend then to local businesses in Honiton supporting the project by reducing their use of single use plastic and providing materials that would be reusable.”
Members will also consider a report by Councillor Roy Coombs, which will recommend they approach East Devon District Council for funding for a new footbridge over The Gissage, near Oaklea.
The district council has estimated that a replacement footbridge would cost more than £30,000.
The town management committee meeting starts at 7pm at the Mackarness Hall, on High Street.
