A SEATON man continues to work for the Royal Air Force at the age of 62.Mervyn Quick, who has worked with the RAF for 45 years, now acts as a Civilian Air Traffic Controller, at RAF Lyneham, in Wiltshire. The former Colyton Grammar School pupil is one of three brothers - all of whom served and continue to serve in the RAF. Mr Quick joined the service in 1964, as a Leading Aircraftsman, at 18.His brother David, 65, worked in RAF personnel support for 47 years, and is now the Squadron leader in charge of Southern England Air Training Corps.Ken, 60, also worked in personnel support, for 30 years, and is now at the station families' office at RAF Lyneham,.Mervyn spoke of his lifelong work with the RAF. He said: "It was a simple choice. I either signed up to the RAF or became an accountant. There weren't a lot of jobs around and I thought it would be more exciting to get out and see the world."My older brother David had already joined up so I thought I'd follow him."As well as excitement, Mervyn experienced nerve-wracking moments. While based at RAF Lossiemouth in Scotland, Mervyn helped land a Hawker Hunter jet when its engine 'flamed out' mid-flight.Using the pilot's read-outs and his radar information, Mervyn made calculations to help the pilot land safely."It's like three dimensional chess," he said. "You've got to keep your wits about you at all times. At the RAF Lyneham, base, regular night vision training exercises are carried out and it is an official emergency diversion landing site for aircraft in trouble. All three brothers joined the RAF as Leading Aircraftsmen and worked their way up the non-commissioned ranks to become Warrant Officers. Both Mervyn and David went on to earn their commissions at RAF College Cranwell and became officers in the early 1980s.Mervyn said he achieved his dream of seeing the world, serving in Borneo, Singapore, Malaysia, Oman and Malta. He said: "I've never regretted my decision to join the RAF. Overall I just love the job. I love air traffic, it is very, very exciting!
