Extra session planned after almost 800 visited the musuem for the latest family fossil day
HUNDREDS of people have been having monster fun learning about fossils at Lyme Regis.
In fact, so many attended the recent family event at the town’s museum an extra session is being put on next Thursday (August 25) to meet demand.
Fossil hunters Paddy Howe, Chris Andrew and Brandon Lennon will be inside and outside the museum all day to talk about small invertebrate fossils and give visitors the experience of rock-splitting to see how fossils are hidden within stones, and to cut and polish an ammonite to keep.
There will be impressive fossil specimens on display including, Mary Anning’s great two-metre long ichthyosaur skull, on a return visit to Lyme 200 years after it was discovered in the cliffs there, on loan from the Natural History Museum in London.
More recent spectacular finds made by Paddy Howe, earlier this year will also be on show, and there will be a chance to handle fossils, ask questions and bring fossils for identification.
Museum admission is free all day and rock splitting and ammonite polishing is from 11am to 3.30pm.
