Local MP calls for more people to “shop local”.
Local MP Neil Parish has shown his support for British farmers and is encouraging more people to “shop local” to help the rural economy.
He joined 60 other MPs and peers, the Secretary of State for DEFRA, Caroline Spellman, and DEFRA ministers Richard Benyon and Lord Taylor, at the House of Commons last week to mark the launch of the National Farmers’ Union’s (NFU) campaign Farming Delivers for Britain.
A new report by the NFU reveals the farming sector is bucking the economic trend and contributed some �85billion to the UK economy last year - helping to keep around 3.5 million people in work.
Mr Parish, who is a former farmer, said: “It is vital that the UK becomes more self-sufficient by producing more of its own food and I would encourage everyone, including the public sector, to shop local. Buying British produce is a sure-fire way of helping the rural economy and ensuring that our food is of the highest quality.”
