Axminster Job Club open event brings together members of the business community.

MP NEIL Parish and representatives from the business community joined Axminster Job Club at an open morning in the town.

The event gave local recruiters the opportunity to meet with the club’s committee and volunteers, and learn more about what it does and how it can help employers reach those seeking work.

Axminster Job Club was set up by Axminster Churches Together and, since opening in May 2010, more than 850 visits have been made to the club by jobseekers.

Elizabeth Lynn, chairman of Axminster Job Club, said: “We are very pleased at how the event has gone and we are so glad so many employers turned out.

“We are hoping that employers will see what we are doing and recognise that we have the most motivated job searchers here.

“We do hope Axminster Job Club gets bigger and better. We are open to everyone.

“I would just encourage people to come along and meet others in their situation.”

The event brought together members of Axminster Chamber of Commerce and big employers, as well as representatives from smaller businesses in the area.

Shane Morgan, chairman of Axminster Chamber of Commerce, said: “We would like to see more businesses get involved and get employers here to meet their potential work force.”

The work of the club even won support from MP Neil Parish, the representative for Tiverton and Honiton.

He said: “It is excellent the work being done by Axminster Job Club.

“It is just what is needed.

“We talk about the big society, but this is a big community that is working together.

“I’ve always been impressed by Axminster – there is very good community spirit here.

“We are facing very difficult economic times and people need any help they can get.

“I wish the Axminster Job Club well.”
