Should every person convicted of murder receive a life sentence, regardless of individual circumstances?
While the Government has defended the mandatory sentence, the Lord Chief Justice has called for a free vote in Parliament on the reform of murder laws.
Meanwhile, the Homicide Review Advisory Group, which comprises judges, academics and former QCs, has claimed the current system does not work.
Some Midweek Herald readers have told us today that current punishments are not tough enough.
