Musicians from Axminster’s twin town of Douvres join the Axe Vale Orchestra for a Guildhall concert

Axe Vale Orchestra, along with the French Orchestra La Croch’Coeur from Axminster’s twin town of Douvres la Deliverande, held a fun play day on Saturday, November 3, in The Guildhall.

The day of rehearsal ended with an informal concert which saw both orchestras performing a number of pieces including Eric Coates’ London Suite and Bizet’s Carmen directed by Leslie Baker and conducted by Thierry Anquetil.

The French orchestra, which included four outstanding teenage trumpeters, was hosted by a number of people from Axminster Twinning Association and was treated to a traditional English breakfast on their arrival cooked by the Mayor Jeremy Walden.

After the concert and light supper the twinning association held an open mic night.

This was hosted by Jess Morton, from Colyton, who kicked things off and ended the evening singing and playing keyboard. She also accompanied Chris Bradwell who played the clarinet. There were a wonderful variety of talented musicians who performed and entertained. Carly Perrin, a young and up coming star from Axminster played guitar and sang in her own original style.

The audience was also treated to a French sax group which played a number called the Fairy Queen. A gentlemen who sang an amusing old fashioned ditty and another gentlemen who although English performed two French numbers on an accordion that thrilled the French visitors.

Axminster’s Town Crier Nick Goodwin got involved when he played keyboard and sang a song he had written for his wife on her wedding day.

The French Orchestra left Axminster on the Sunday morning to return to their home town in Normandy.

Axminster Twinning Association are a busy group of people who are working hard to keep the connection between the two towns alive.
