A back part of the bench was recently found washed up in the Axe estuary by local dog walker Tony Pickard. It bears a plaque with the inscription: ‘In loving memory of my darling wife Lesley Kathleen Thain died suddenly 26 March 2001 aged 50’.

Mr Pickard said: “It appears it has drifted downstream so could have come from any one of the many tributaries feeding the Axe. It is currently in The Harbour Inn, Axmouth.”
