HONITON resident Tony Simpson was pleased to read that Herald reader Sheila McBrearty had received a response from Number 10 after writing to the Prime Minister about Tesco.

He's been writing to Downing Street for 50 years - with no response, he says.

He told the Herald: "Could it be that I'm asking the wrong question? Not about Tesco, but about Trident.

"Three times this year I have asked Gordon Brown why he is spending billions of pounds on nuclear weapons and how could he, as a Christian, press the nuclear button?

"I've sent him my usual Christmas card, which says: "Peace and a nuclear free New Year.

"I mean it, Gordon. Do you?
