Sweet Black Angels reform after splitting earlier this year.

A NEW chapter is unfolding for Honiton’s Sweet Black Angels as the folk-rock band prepares to burst back onto the music scene.

The Angels are back, fielding a new line-up - guitarist Adam Sweet, drummer Ollie Kirtley and bassist Ryan Marks - with original members Scott Phillips and Andrew ‘Smoo’ Wall.

Lead singer Scott, who has since started a solo career as The Peaceful Hooligan, said: “It was a massive decision to try and get the band back together again and we wanted to make sure the guys that left were 100 per cent sure they didn’t want to play any more before even thinking about whether to get new guys in or call it a day altogether.

“I wanted to make sure I had my solo project up and running full-time before getting Sweet Black Angels back on the road again, but now that all seems to be going well I really felt like I wanted to put my efforts into reforming Sweet Black Angels.”

New guitarist Adam supported Sweet Black Angels during their 2006 tour with another local band, Nil By Mouth, and was the band’s first choice when they decided to reform.

Bass player Ryan is a family friend of Scott and used to help his father and brother with the lights and sound at Sweet Black Angels gigs in Honiton.

The final member of the new look, Ollie, also met the band during its 2006 tour of London, when his band, The Barfly in Camden, supported the Honiton rockers and also plays the drums for Scott’s The Peaceful Hooligan project.

Scott told the Midweek Herald that the new look Angels were looking at doing three gigs a year in London supporting bigger names with their own material, moving away from doing cover material.

The band are currently working on their third album and are even looking to do go across the pond and do an acoustic tour in America.

He said: “The new line up is sounding great and we have made sure that everyone is on the same wave length musically and dedication wise.

“We are currently working on a third album that will hopefully be out next year.

“Hopefully, this will be a new, exciting chapter in the life of Sweet Black Angels.”

The new-look band will been taking to the stage on July 1 when they support Alabama 3 at the Brixton Jam in London.

A bus will be running from Honiton to the gig.
