SEATON Tourist Information Centre will remain at the tramway terminal after the town council agreed to accept an offer of temporary accommodation.

SEATON Tourist Information Centre will remain at the tramway terminal after the town council agreed to accept an offer of temporary accommodation.

The news comes after representatives from the chamber of commerce and local accommodation providers spoke out against a move.

The council received an order of notice from East Devon District Council last month, that the TIC had to vacate its premises at the Underfleet car park by October 2010.

It will be located at the tramway from February 2010 and work for the visitor centre is expected to start before October 2010.

Town clerk David Mears said: "It is inevitable that major disruption will take place on the regeneration site over the next couple of years and we are very grateful to Seaton Tramway for their offer.

"It will ensure that we can maintain a quality service to tourists and to local businesses and accommodation providers during what is going to be a very difficult time.

"It will involve some restructuring of the TIC, but we will ensure that there is a highly visible tourist information presence at the Underfleet, whilst building work takes place.

"We hope that, when regeneration is complete, there will be a fully restored TIC in the new Visitor Centre."

Jenny Nunn, managing director of Seaton Tramway, said they were happy to facilitate the move as they believe it will help maintain tourism in the area.

The council made the decision during its full council meeting on Monday, November 16, which was held in private.

The TIC building is owned by EDDC but staffed by Seaton Town Council.
