PLANS to extend a building to create a new youth centre at Colyton playing fields have been given the green light. The proposals to carry out the work to the existing pavilion building at the Peace Memorial Playing Fields were discussed last week at East Devon District Council's development control committee meeting.Councillor Helen Parr, committee vice chairman, said: "This is a very important community project. It will accommodate youth going from pre-school right through to older teenagers and we have identified it as an important provision, which is lacking."This new design is absolutely ideal. I think it is an excellent design. I don't think there is any reason for refusal and I hope the committee will approve it."Concerns had been raised by Colyton Parish Council, who felt that the proposed metal roof should be tiled to match the existing pavilion roof. The conclusion of the planning officer's report said: "Consideration has been given to the request of the parish council that the roof be in tile to match, but it is not considered that there are any strong design or visual reasons for this and the use of tiles would compromise what the building is trying to achieve architecturally and would also necessitate a redesign of the building because of the weight."The committee voted for approval subject to conditions, including the requirement for samples of materials and finishes to be submitted before work is begun and the car park being properly surfaced, consolidated and spaces properly marked out.
