No support for Axminster housing plan

AN outline planning application that could see 400 houses built around the Cloakham Lawns Sports Centre, in Axminster, has been recommended for refusal by Axminster Town Council's planning committee.

Although the decision is still to be ratified by the full town council, members of the committee said they did not like what was being proposed, citing among their concerns congestion and the ability of sewerage to cope with the new development.

Flooding concerns were also raised.

However, councillors said they were not necessarily opposed to the idea of developing the site, but said investment would need to be made in the town's infrastructure, before they could pass an informed decision.

More than 100 members of the public attended the planning committee meeting, which was held at the Guildhall on Tuesday, May 25.
