THERE will be no town poll in Honiton to gauge the public's support for new plans for the Beehive Community Centre.
Councillors rejected calls for a referendum, saying extensive public consultation has been carried out over many years.
Among those to call for a poll was Honitonian and local historian Dennis Cooper and Ken Sherman, chairman of the Northcote Lane Area Residents' Association.
They urged a special meeting of Honiton Town Council on Monday night to vote for a town poll.
Mr Cooper said: "In view of the cost, does the council consider it has a mandate from residents to go ahead?"
Mr Sherman said, if the council agreed to a town poll, "at least you could say you knew what you were voting for".
