AS Honiton Register Office prepares to move out of Elmfield House to a new base in the East Devon Business Centre, at Heathpark, there has been a hitch.

It has been discovered the business centre is not licensed to hold ceremonies, meaning the registrar cannot conduct marriages and civil partnerships there.

Staff at the register office were this week advising those enquiring about marriages that ceremonies would not be taking place at the business centre for the foreseeable future.

The new office will be only able to deal with the registration of births and deaths.

It is understood by the Herald that efforts are under way to identify alternative premises for weddings.

East Devon District Council gave the Devon County Council service six months to vacate Elmfield House - to make way for a major expansion of the Thelma Hulbert Gallery.

The register office officially moves into its new premises on Saturday (August 1).

Both councils failed to respond in time for the Herald's deadline.
