Nominations for this year’s British Citizen Youth Award in association with Specsavers – which recognises the extraordinary contributions made by young people to society, charities and communities – are now open.

The awards will give the public the chance to highlight the many acts of kindness, bravery and compassion carried out by children across the UK.

Those selected to receive an award will be invited to attend a special presentation at the Palace of Westminster in October 2017, where Specsavers founder Dame Mary Perkins will present the medals. It is the second year of Specsavers’ involvement, having sponsored the inaugural awards in 2016.

Last year Torquay sisters Esme, aged seven and Bronte, aged four were nominated and represented the south west at the awards presentation in the Palace of Westminster with Dame Mary Perkins and Pussycat Doll, Kimberley Wyatt.

The sisters were awarded for their fundraising efforts in support of their parent’s charity, the Mariposa Trust, a baby loss charity started in 2012.

Emilie De Bruijn, who works for the Mariposa Trust and nominated the girls, said: “I immediately thought of the girls when I heard about the awards as both of them are truly committed to making the world a better place. They love helping others and fundraise at any given opportunity, even donating their birthday money.”

Specsavers Honiton store director, Stephen Auty said: “It’s so inspiring to hear the incredible stories and achievements of the young people nominated for the British Citizen Youth Award, and we’re extremely proud to be involved in such as a worthy cause.”

The British Citizen Youth Award is open to all children who will be under the age of 16 in October 2017.

To apply, email jacquif@britishcitizenawards.co.uk with BCYA in the subject line. The deadline for all entries is Wednesday, August 9 2017.
