Non-voters 'too critical of Honiton Town Council'

HOW can Honiton residents criticise a decision of the town council when the vast majority failed to vote in town council elections three years ago?

That is the view of former councillor Liz Tirard, who points out: "Three years ago, only 35 per cent voted in the town council election."

Referring to controversial plans for the Beehive Community Centre, she told the Herald: "Those who called for a town poll probably did vote, but this town suffers from so many people who stand on street corners and moan but, if they had used their vote, they would have more right to complain. Councillors have been elected to make decisions on behalf of the town and they are bound by tight protocols."

Mrs Tirard is keen to point out that minutes of every meeting are available online or through the council offices in New Street.

"There is no reason why townspeople should not be aware of decisions being made on their behalf," she said.

"They can also attend meetings and make their views known. They can lobby councillors."

Mrs Tirard added: "I agree with Peter Halse, we have got one of the best councils we have ever had - and this is not decrying previous town councils.

"As a former town councillor, I have worked with many of the current councillors and I cannot fault their hard work and endeavour on behalf of the town.
