Peace and quiet for Honiton residents after South West Trains tones down platform announcements.

Honiton residents have got a message for South West Trains - thank you!

They can now enjoy some peace and quiet in their own homes, after the train operator toned down its public address announcements at Honiton Railway Station.

A security message, warning passengers not to leave bags unattended on platforms, was being broadcast up to 50 times a day - and residents living near the station could hear it.

Pensioner Jean Turl, of Jerrard Close, said it was being played too often and too loud.

Now, following the Midweek Herald’s front page story two weeks ago, the announcements have been curbed.

“I’ve been outside in my garden for half an hour and I didn’t hear a thing,” said Miss Turl.

“The Midweek Herald has achieved in a week what I’d spent months trying to get done.”

South West Trains told The Herald it was conducting a review of the quality and frequency of public announcements.
