A MAJORITY of children in the foundation unit at Honiton Community Primary School are on track to meet expectations in all areas of learning and development, according to Ofsted inspectors who have given the unit a "good" rating.Children in the combined nursery and reception classes are receiving "a good start, with many making excellent progress in their personal, creative and physical development", a summary of the Ofsted report states.The unit received a good rating for its effectiveness in providing early years education.Inspectors said: "Children work well together in groups and sustain their interest when required to learn without direct adult support."They benefit from the close partnership between parents and staff."The leadership of the Early Year Foundation Stage is good. Systems are well-organised and staff work well together."Inspectors said children's well-being is afforded paramount importance, and also highlighted how an improved outdoor area is being used effectively to enhance children's learning in parallel with their classroom experiences.Grants totalling �3,000 were secured to transform the space.A gravel pit and storage has been added, as well as garden areas which are being used to grow vegetables.Local gardener Matt Hurford worked with the children to build planters.Teacher Greg Bottrill said: "The children used real tools to help him. They were learning about building for a purpose."It was about team work between adults and children."The children even helped to build a shed."When the Herald visited the unit last week, children were enjoying a project about buried treasure.Some children buried their treasure in the gravel and challenged others to find it.
