AXMINSTER Town council could struggle to repair The Old Courthouse, it emerged in the monthly meeting. The building in Church Street, which houses the town's museum, tourist information centre, senior citizens' centre and the Arts Cafe, has damaged timber joists caused by water. The council has been quoted £650 plus VAT for a simple treatment but fear it will cost more and limited funds will be unable to cover it.Mayor Graham Godbeer said: "I think we are talking about more significant money. "We're between a rock and a hard place. We have no money and no reserves for the building."I suggest we set up a working party to review all the assets in the town and if any are saleable."It was suggested the insurance company would be contacted to see if they would cover the damage and that the care service be asked to contribute to the cost. But it was highlighted that there was no immediate risk, and work could begin in the winter when it was less likely to affect trade.
