Axmouth viewing platform gives wildlife fans fabulous views across the wetlands and Seaton marshes
Wildlife enthusiasts have a new vantage point at Axmouth.
A viewing platform has been built at Coronation Corner, offering fabulous views over the Axe estuary and wetlands – a favourite spot for birdwatchers.
Residents turned out in force for its official opening on Saturday, performed by county councillor Jim Knight.
Parish council chairman Carol Rapley told the gathering: “It has long been our dream to have more viewing space given that we can see directly over Seaton Marshes local nature reserve and beyond to the Axe Estuary Wetlands. The viewing platform will be a real asset to the community, enabling local people to make the most of this fantastic habitat on our doorstep.”
Parish Councillor Crescy Cannan paid tribute to Cllr Knight for his support and encouragement which has helped to bring the project to fruition.
They were also grateful to South West Water for allowing the platform to be constructed on its land.
Axmouth Parish Council received a grant for the project from the Devon County Council’s ‘Invest in Devon’ capital fund arising from the sale of Exeter Airport.
The Davis family also made a generous donation in memory of their parents, Audrey and Graham, who loved to sit by the river.
Further donations from the Axe Vale and District Conservation Society and from the Devon Bird Watching and Preservation Society resulted in a first-rate interpretation panel for the site which will enable visitors to appreciate the rich birdlife of the estuary.
