The crops include rarely seen crops such as oca, skirret and various perennial substitutes for spinach.

Community recycling group Otter Rotters is trialling various crops shown to support the dietary needs of people with a health concern.

Rotters’ Mandy Jennings said: “Our aim is to focus on plants that can help balance the effects of diabetes or other health issues like high cholesterol whilst maximising biodiversity. We are raising yacon, which produce a tuber with a refreshing, fruity sweetness but which will not effect the sugar levels of a diabetic. We are also growing rarely seen crops such as oca, skirret and various perennial substitutes for spinach.”
