POLICE have launched an investigation to find the culprit who caused a Tar Barrels explosion which left an Ottery man with burns to his face and 11 others taken to hospital.

Inquiries are now under way into the belief the explosion was caused by an aerosol can being placed in a lit barrel close to the town's factory site on Thursday at around 9.45pm.

A Facebook group calling for the "Tar Barrel aerosol thrower to be brought to justice" has attracted more than 2,000 members.

A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police said today: "Officers believe other spectators may have also suffered minor burns and are keen for them to come forward and speak to the police.

"It is thought some of those injured are not from the local area and travelled down from Avon and Somerset and from further afield.

"The area was obviously very busy with spectators throughout the night and police would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident.
