IT'S really fresh and tastes a lot better" - that's how pupils at Honiton Community Primary School have described school dinners now food is freshly prepared on the premises.The number of children eating school dinners has doubled since �300,000 was invested in a school kitchen.Previously, meals were prepared at the neighbouring community college where a contractor now runs a Starbucks-style cafe.Your Herald last week joined primary school pupils for lunch and asked them what they thought of the meals.Jacob Rabjohns, nine, said: "Back in September, only three or four people in my class were eating school dinners. Now there are eight or ten."I like fish and chips, which we have some Fridays, and I also like the wider range of meals to choose from."Lucy Wilson, nine, said: "Loads of people didn't have school dinners, now they do."And Emma Prettejohn, 10, said: "People used to prefer a packed lunch. Now the food is really fresh and it tastes a lot better."Jemima Salter, 11, was a member of the school's kitchen working party.After carrying out a survey of pupils' views, she helped decide what colour uniform the kitchen staff should wear and even played a part in appointing the kitchen manager.When the Herald visited the school last Wednesday chicken breast, roast potatoes and fresh veg were on the menu, along with a delicious cheese and broccoli bake, pasta and a selection of healthy desserts.The meals cost �1.85 and children said they think that's good value for money.
