The Herald received a report that a shopper was robbed after accepting an offer to smell perfume.
The incident was alleged to have occurred outside a supermarket in Yeovil, Somerset.
However, a spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: "It's an urban myth. We are trying to dispel it.
"My colleagues and I were made aware of the rumour this morning. It is not true.
