PARENTS in Axminster are calling for a ban on short skirts in schools after girls were approached by a stranger - because of the length of their clothing.A man reportedly posed as a reporter and asked the teenagers for their details because he was "doing a documentary on short skirts".Although the girls gave false details and no harm came to them, parents fear short skirts are drawing unwanted attention. One parent, who does not wish to be named, has a child at Axe Vale Community College. He said: "They have got a rule about the length of skirts at the college, but girls don't adhere to it. I wish they would."If you have girls who wear short skirts, it invites the wrong kind of attention. "You have to be careful with young children because, unfortunately, there are some people who would take advantage of them."Martin Smith, head teacher at Axe Valley Community College, said he expected all students to wear their uniform correctly and standards had been raised this year.He said: "Where students fall short of these standards we challenge this and will contact parents. "This includes girls who wear skirts that are judged to be too short."We are committed to raising the bar. I have recently written to parents outlining how we will improve uniform further in September and the feedback has been very positive."One parent emailed me to say 'I find the school's standards very reassuring as it clearly sends out the right message'."WHAT do you think? Should the length of school skirts be stipulated to parents and students?
