Not so long ago, a march was organised to demonstrate against the possibility of a supermarket being built on the East Devon District Council-owned land at the Underfleet, Seaton, which would affect the playground, skatepark and some of the car park areas and, to the many supporters of the march, this idea would be unacceptable. It now transpires that some of the parish councillors, who were elected on the strength of feeling at the time and are, perhaps, suffering from a dose of Tescophobia, are rushing forward with open arms to welcome an upmarket supermarket whose installation would cause major disruption and loss of use of the playground, skatepark and some car parking areas for six months or more. The playground area has still not recovered after being closed for a number of weeks just for an investigative dig .This particular supermarket would not be competitive, price-wise, to the existing store and many families would find it unaffordable to shop there. No thought has been put into the reality of the scheme and the disruption it would cause, apart from some simulated computer aided design ideas that can be carried out in minutes with a few clicks of a mouse. Moving over to the real world, almost any youngster, if supplied with the current layout of Seaton highlighting the derelict brownfield sites, would have no problem in positioning the models on these readily available sites rather than disturbing their leisure facilities. If the supermarket was to be installed on the skatepark area, it would make available a large extra piece of land on the Harbour Road site to enable the building of many more houses to add to those already under discussion. This would make the Tescophobics happy, but upset those who disagree with more housing in Seaton. Maybe, with another click of the mouse, the proposed Magna site could be transferred onto this extra brownfield area, satisfying the objectors to the Harepath Road project on the grounds of the AONB.Just shows that you cannot please all of the people all of the time, but it is important to remember that Seaton should be planned with the next generation in mind and for the older folk to accept that changes have to be made for a better mixed and more robust society in Seaton.
