THE work of six teenagers in Honiton was praised as they helped to clear part of The Glen.

The youngsters, all members of Honiton Youth Club, rebuilt a flight of rustic steps, repaired a damaged fence, and cut and removed about five tonnes of laurel overgrowth.

The work involved a lot of lifting, with about two tonnes of stone scalpings being brought in by hand for the path and the five tonnes of timber that was cut, had to be carried out by hand from the stream valley.

The group worked with Alan Fowler, Dave Seal and Barry Bending, from East Devon District Council's StreetScene service.

EDDC's youth champion, Councillor Iain Chubb, said: "I'm delighted to see the fine work that these young people have done to improve their neighbourhood. It just goes to show what can be done by a small group of enthusiastic volunteers, who really care about their neighbourhood."

The work was also praised at Honiton Town Council, which met on Monday, August 10. Councillor Alf Boom said: "There has been a lot of work on The Glen by the youth club members.

"They got soaking wet on the first day but they still came back."

He asked that their work be acknowledged by the town council with a small presentation to recognise their efforts.

The regular Glen Regeneration Group always welcomes offers of help, especially younger people who care about their environment.
