Seaton club members and their guests take a tour of Brunel’ famous steamship
A guided tour of the SS Great Britain - the former passenger steamship and now a museum - was enjoyed by members of Seaton and District Men’s Probus Club and their guests when they travelled to Bristol.
This wrought-iron vessel was built in 1843 in Bristol, under the supervision of Brunel, Britain’s greatest engineer, for the Great Western Steamship Company.
The club learned the history of this magnificent ship, the epic salvage effort in 1970 to refloat her from the Falklands, where she had been beached and abandoned to the elements and how she had been towed back home across the Atlantic to her birthplace. Following a £11.3m refit, she is now one of world’s most important maritime museums.
