If 10 electors or a third of the electors present vote in favour, a second town poll will be called over Honiton Town Council’s plan to develop a community centre.

A public meeting will take place in Honiton on March 29 - to decide if there should be a second town poll over controversial plans to develop a 2million community centre in the town.

Honiton Town Council has received a petition, signed by six Honiton residents, calling for the meeting, which will take place in the council offices at 7pm.

All residents on the electoral roll in Honiton are invited to attend - to decide if the following question should be put to voters at the polls: Do you, the council tax payers of Honiton, wish the town council to proceed any further with the community centre project? However, a statement issued by the council said: “The cost of a poll is borne by the taxpayers of the parish through the council tax.

“A town poll is not a referendum – there is no legal framework for a town council to hold a referendum.

“The outcome of the poll is no more and no less than an expression of the views of the electorate of the parish who have voted in the poll and is not binding.”

The town council pressed ahead with its proposals, but East Devon District Council then withdrew its offer of the site.

New plans are for a building on the car park next to Honiton Magistrates’ Court.
