Pupils grow their own feast

Pupils at Mrs Ethelston’s Primary School in Uplyme have been taking part in a ground-breaking outdoor learning experience.

Through the Greencuisine Trust project ‘Grow, Cook, Share’ they are creating a fruit and vegetable garden on the site earmarked for their new school, near the village hall.

The children have learnt about soil types, crop rotation, wildlife habitats and seasonal vegetables. They have also considered which vegetables to plant in the garden, based on what they would enjoy cooking for the celebration feast at the end of the year.

Teachers say the garden has enormous potential for learning and has already brought to life numeracy, literacy and science in a real life situation and the children have many ideas of ways in which they would like to develop the space.

During the Spring term each class has planted a fruit tree which they will spend a year caring for, before handing them over to future pupils to harvest.

And during the Summer term the children will visit Trill Farm, a diverse working farm that aims to inspire healthy and responsible living. The children will participate in wild harvesting and pizza-making days and creative food and nutrition workshops in the kitchen.

The challenge over the next few months is to grow enough for the community feast in September – but in the meantime the priority is to put up fencing to stop rabbits eating all the produce. The Greencuisine Trust team would be pleased to hear from anyone who can help with this.
