Extraordinary meeting to be held tonight (Thursday) to discuss the community centre.

A former councillor feels a great injustice is being done to the people of town and the results of the town poll have been ignored by the Honiton Town Council.

Jill McNally and Richard Gaughan have written to the chief executive at East Devon District Council to raise concerns over a forthcoming extraordinary meeting to be held on Thursday (May 31).

They feel the result of the recent town poll has been ignored by the town council.

She said: “We feel a great injustice is being done to the people of this town and do not know how best this can be resolved other than to write to you.

“We feel we are not being listened to by our own town council and are very worried by the monies being spent on a project which may not be right for this town.

In the letter, they raised concerns over the agenda for the forthcoming meeting which does not mention the poll.

They added: “All it does is resolve to continue with building the Beehive and totally ignores the town poll.

“This arrogant attitude of completely disregarding this town’s wishes is surely, at the very best, questionable in a quality council.

“We feel we cannot put a question about the town poll to this town council at public question time as the matter has not even been placed on the agenda.”

A spokesman for the town council said: “Following the recent town poll, the town council decided at its meeting on May 14 to look again at the current situation regarding the Beehive and make a final decision whether to go ahead.

“The town clerk was instructed to write a briefing paper setting out the background and to make a recommendation. It is this recommendation which forms the substantive agenda item for the meeting on May 31 and this motion will be debated and put to the vote among councillors, when it may be resolved or defeated.

“As at all Honiton Town Council meetings, the public is invited to put forward questions relating to any aspect of the agenda item, including the town poll, and the chairman has agreed to double the length of time normally given to public questions.”

The meeting will be held in the town council chambers, at 7pm.
