Around 15,000 to 16,000 attended Evolution Rocks! - which organisers say is one of the leading science festivals in the country.
Marquees along the seafront included displays by the Natural History Museum, British Antarctic Survey and a visit by UNESCO from Paris.
Organiser Marcus Dixon said: "The weather was so good.
"A lot of people came especially for the festival, but many people discovered it when they came for a day on the beach and saw all the free activity for young people.
"I had tried to get national publicity for the event but I'm glad I didn't as the whole of the town would have been completely gridlocked if there were more people.
"Feedback has been that it was one of the best days the town's had in a very long time.
"What I love about the festival most is the atmosphere and buzz of enjoyment.
