Town flies the flag to commemorate Merchant Navy Day
Merchant Navy Day on September 3 was celebrated at Seaton’s Windsor Gardens by the raising of the Red Ensign.
The ceremony was attended by members of the Merchant Navy Association (East Devon), Seaton branch of the Royal British Legion, and the mayor of Seaton, Cllr Jack Rowland.
Since 2000, Merchant Navy Day has honoured the brave men and women who kept our ‘Island Nation’ afloat during both World Wars, and celebrated our dependence on modern day merchant seafarers who are responsible for 95 per cent of the UK’s imports, including much of the food we eat, most of the fuel we burn and virtually all the products and goods we take for granted.
This year Seafarers UK campaigned for the Red Ensign - the UK Merchant Navy’s official flag - to be flown on civic buildings and landmark flagpoles across the UK.
Parish, community, town, city, district and borough councils were all invited to take part.
