WORK has begun on a £121,000 refurbishment of the recycling centre near Honiton.

The refit at Sutton Barton, near Offwell, is designed to increase the recycling at the centre and improve the number of items sold for re-use.

The work will see a new sales building constructed on the site, the concrete walls around the general and green waste bays refurbished and the site will be resurfaced.

Staff accommodation on the site will also be upgraded.

The work began on Monday and is expected to be complete by the end of April.

Councillor Margaret Rogers, Devon County Council executive member for environment said: "These works will refurbish the existing site which is now showing its age.

"In addition, a new sales building will be provided so that re-usable goods can be stored indoors, protected from the weather.

"This will mean that even more waste can be recycled or re-used at this popular site and less will end up in landfill, making Devon even greener."

During the course of the refurbishment, the centre will be open as normal but there could be delays for people using the site.

Residents are asked to be patient during the work and, if possible, avoid using it until the project has been completed.

l The recycling centre at Wood's Farm, near Sidmouth is also being extended in March, at a cost of £11,000.
