Latest crime figures released.

May has seen a rise in crime in the Seaton rural area, according to the latest police figures.

The monthly crime figure increased from seven in April 2012 to 16 in May. Compared to the same period last year, crime has risen from 14 in 2011 – an increase of 14 per cent.

PC Stephen Speariett said: “May has seen a rise in crime and is only one crime below the long-term average.

“Colyton has also seen an increase but five of these crimes were domestic related. In both instances, charges have been brought against the offender.

“In relation to the two thefts on the 30th enquiries are progressing in locating the offender.”

Axmouth has also seen its first crime of the year when a Citroen C1 was broken into at Stepps Lane and a purse and credit cards were stolen from the boot on May 28.

PC Speariett added: “Axmouth has seen its first crime of the year and we urge motorists not to leave any valuable items in their vehicles. If you do have to, make sure they are out of sight or hidden away.”

There was also a rise in the number of crimes reported in Colyton with 10 incidents recorded bring the total to 10 crimes compared to four last month.

Two residential properties were broken into and jewellery was stolen in Burnadsfield Road.

There was also an incident of common assault, after a domestic incident, and possession of cannabis - a man was charged for these offences.

A wooden fence was also subjected to criminal damage in the Peace Memorial Playing Fields.

A man was also charged with criminal damage and possession of an offensive weapon following a domestic incident.

On May 30 a man is believed to have stolen a charity box from the town hall whilst a meeting was taking place.

He is described as white, aged 16 to 24 years old, 5’8” with thick dark hair and tanned skin. He was also wearing a long-sleeved tartan and check shirt with a white t-shirt underneath.

There was a further theft from the Spar shop – police believe it could have been the same man.
